River’s End RV Park and Campground is just a few blocks down from the Tybee Post Theater. The place is so popular and puts on such an eclectic mix of shows that it can be tough for even us to get tickets!
The theater has deep roots in Tybee Island going back to its 1930 construction as a movie house for soldiers stationed at the army base. This historical place, after going dark in the mid-1960s, was slated for the wrecking ball in 2000 until the visionary voices in the City of Tybee Island and the Tybee Island Historical Society were heard.
50 years later, about a year ago in September of 2015, the space opened as a movie theater and performing arts venue for everyone to patronize. The funds were raised by the Friends of the Tybee Theater to revitalize The Post Theater as a cultural arts center with unparalleled acoustics and great sight lines. You can experience:
- A first-rate concert hall showcasing regional and national live music acts, comedians and dance performances
- A stage for local and touring theater groups
- A film house for classic, children’s and first run movies
- A cultural space for assemblies, recitals and readings
- A unique venue for weddings and other private events
For example, in October, the Post Theater hosts the Savannah Songwriters Series, Sylvie Simmons and Packway Handle Bank, Tybee City Limits and Roland Guerin & Grass Roots Live.
It’s a great place and definitely worth a visit!
